Oil prices are expected to remain high in the medium term

Global crude oil prices are expected to remain high in the medium term, according to HDFC Securities.

Accordingly, the brokerage house's report indicates that the price of Brent crude, which is currently above $75 a barrel, has been driven by a rebound in global demand with the opening of the economy.

"Hurricane Ida hit the US in late July, causing a 1.7 million barrels per day production shutdown in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in August. The IEA expects supplies from the Japanese government to normalise by Q4 CY22," it said.

"With crude oil and petroleum product inventories at the lower half of their five-year range and the EIA estimating global crude supply growth to lag behind demand growth in 2021 as the global economic recovery continues to gain momentum, we see the risk of rising crude oil prices."

In addition, the report notes that domestic gas prices are set to jump sharply.

"According to our estimates, the domestic price of PPM gas will be revised upwards by more than 60 per cent to US$3 per 1 million Btu in the second half of FY22 and another 45 per cent to more than US$4 per 1 million Btu in the first half of FY23, up from the current price of US$1.79 per 1 million Btu.

"The price of BMP gas, which is currently at its lowest level in a decade, is set to rise sharply, helped by higher global gas prices following the unlocking of economies and the current supply shortage in Europe ahead of the winter season," the report said.

According to the report, improved sales will benefit producers.

"We expect ONGC (standalone) to produce 23 million tonnes of oil and 24.8 billion m3 of gas in FY23 and OIL to produce 3.2 million tonnes of oil and 2.6 billion m3 of gas."

"Higher gas prices and higher Brent crude oil prices should improve realisation and, in turn, lead to an average annual profit growth rate of 30-54% over FY21-23 for ONGC and OIL. ONGC should also benefit from an increase in gas production of 12 Mmcf/d in FY21. 25E as production from basin blocks KG ".
