The proposed Win-River casino move in California is back on the table

The proposed relocation of the Redding Rancheria casino is being considered once again. The US federal government has decided to reopen an environmental impact study on the relocation of Win-River Resort & Casino to a tribally-owned property near Interstate 5 and Churn Creek Road. The issue was first raised in 2016, but has not yet been discussed.

Resurgence of property relocation.

The casino is a huge resort covering about 70,000 square feet. It consists of a 9-storey hotel with restaurants, conference centres, shops, 250 rooms and, of course, a large casino floor. It is currently located just off I-5, just south of S. Bonnyview Rd in Redding, California.

Although the casino does not require a permit from the city of Redding or Shasta County, as the only permit required comes from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Redding Rancheria CEO Tracy Edwards said the resort wants to be friendly, so it is doing its best to work with the city and county.

No deadline

Edwards said everyone at the company was excited by the news that the government had published in its ranks that the process of transferring the property to the trust was being restarted. She added that Redding Rancheria is pleased with the fact that the authorities are showing a commitment to working with the indigenous communities and respecting their sovereignty. In addition, they are happy that they can transfer the land to the trusts so that the casino can be moved to I-5.

The CEO also said that Redding Rancheria hopes that, given the government's interest in reopening discussions, the case will be taken to the local level. In doing so, the casino will be able to work with the county and the city and eventually agree on all the issues and launch the project.

The company's only aim is to be transparent and minimise any undesirable impacts on the reservation. Some of those impacts include traffic and law enforcement. Finally, Edwards noted that she is often asked the question, "When will the casino move?" to which there is no answer because the federal government has not set a deadline for it.

Tribes are also engaged in battles in Texas

Texas is one of the US states that has long been opposed to gambling, with one exception - if the resorts bring in huge sums of money, then it is more than welcome. Tribes in the state also face difficulties as they have been excluded from the Indian Gambling Regulation Act of 1988 because of the Restoration Act of 1987.

Two tribes in the state, the Tigua and the Alabama Kushatta in East Texas, had a long battle with the authorities, but as the dispute could not be resolved, the US Supreme Court was finally able to resolve the issue once and for all.
